ABSTRACT

In traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed that the spleen is the foundation of acquired nature and the source of Qi and blood. All life activities of a person since birth depend on the water and grain essence transported by spleen and stomach. The liver helps the spleen to strengthen the movement, the liver and spleen cooperate with each other. The liver and the spleen are invigorated, so that the Qi and blood are sufficient. The external energy can nourish the limbs, muscles and fur. The Qi and blood can be supplied to the internal organs, meridians and bones, and the body can be nourished both inside and outside to strengthen the acquired foundation. Emotional dissatisfaction can lead to stagnation of liver Qi, loss of spleen Qi, failure to dredge Qi, and deficiency of spleen Qi, forming the syndrome of liver depression and spleen deficiency. Its clinical manifestations include the symptoms of liver Qi stagnation such as depression, stamina, and chest fullness, as well as symptoms of spleen deficiency such as anorexia, abdominal distension, loose stools. Xiaoyaowan is an effective classic prescription for the treatment of liver stagnation and spleen deficiency syndrome, which is based on the dosage form of Xiaoyaosan in Prescriptions of the Bureau of Taiping People's Welfare Pharmacy. It has the effect of relieving depression, nourishing blood and invigorating spleen. In modern research, it has been found that Xiaoyaowan has good curative effect in the treatment of endocrine diseases, liver diseases, immune diseases, and neurological diseases, etc. It was praised by the famous medical scientist YE Tian-shi in the Qing Dynasty as "the holy medicine for women", with a wide range of significant curative effects gynecology. Progress has been also made in pharmacological research. In this article, we have searched and consulted the relevant literature reports of Xiaoyaowan in recent years, summarized the key directions of the pharmacological research literature, and proposed deficiencies to provide relevant basis for the in-depth study of Xiaoyao pill in the future.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo assess the clinical efficacy and the safety for periarthritis of shoulder treated with deep puncture by elongated needle combined with spike-hooked needle and cupping.

METHODSA multicentral randomized controlled study was adopted. One hundred and twenty cases were divided into an observation group and a control group, 60 cases in each one. In observation group, elongated needle, spike-hooked needle and cupping were used to stimulate Jianyu (LI 15), Naoshu (SI 10), Naohui (TE 13) and Jianqian (Extra). In control group, a conventional needling and cupping were applied to the same points as observation group. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Melle evaluation for the function activity of shoulder joint were adopted to assess and compare the efficacy on analgesia and the effect on shoulder joint range of motion before and after treatment in two groups.

RESULTSIn observation group, the cured and markedly effective rate of analgesia was 91.7% (55/60), which was obviously better than 20.4% (12/59) in control group (P < 0.001). Concerning to the improvements of the range of motion in shoulder joint, the cured and markedly effective rate in observation group was 91.7% (55/60), which was better than 18. 6% (11/59) in control group (P < 0.001). VAS score and Melle score after treatment were apparently improved as compared with those before treatment in two groups (all P < 0.001). The improvements in observation group were superior to those in control group (both P < 0.001). There was no adverse event reported during the treatment in two groups.

CONCLUSIONThe deep puncture by elongated needle combined with spike-hooked needle and cupping achieves a significant clinical efficacy on periarthritis of shoulder and has no adverse reaction reported.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo observe the therapeutic effect of warm needle moxibustion on chronic non-bacterial prostatitis.

METHODSOne hundred and twenty-five cases were randomly divided into a warm needle moxibustion group (n = 42), an acupuncture group (n = 41) and a western medicine group (n = 42). The warm needle moxibustion group was treated with acupuncture at Shenshu (BL 23), Ganshu (BL 18), Zhibian (BL 54) with no retention of the needles, and warm needle moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV 4), Zhongji (CV 3), Yinlingquan (SP 9), Sanyin-jiao (SP 6), once daily; the acupuncture group with acupuncture at the same acupoints as the warm needle moxibus tion group with no moxibustion; and the western medicine group with oral administration of Prostat Tablets, one tablet each time, twice daily. The therapeutic effects and scores of chronic prostatitis symptom indexes (NIH-CPSI) were compared.

RESULTSThe total effective rate was 88.10% in the warm needle moxibustion group, 63.41% in the acupuncture group and 66.67% in the western medicine group, the warm needle moxibustion group being better than the acupuncture group and the western medicine group (both P < 0.05). After treatment, the scores of NIH-CPSI was 11.92 +/- 7.11 in the warm needle moxibustion group, 16.08 +/- 6.83 in the acupuncture group and 15.66 +/- 5.88 in the western medicine group, with significant decreases in the 3 groups as compared with those before treatment (all P < 0.01), and after treatment, the score in the warm needle moxibustion group was significant different to that of the acupuncture group or the western medicine group (both P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONThe warm needle moxibustion has a good therapeutic effect on chronic non-bacterial prostatitis.
